Auteur theory

Discuss the ‘auteur theory’ covering How it came about What it really means What problems there are with it The auteur theory was developed in 1962 by Andrew Sarris, although it has been influencing filmmakers since Francois Truffaut advocated it in 1954. This theory is the concept of a director imposing his own style and the personality of a film. Their films will be clearly recognized as theirs as the ongoing themes and motifs are easily distinguished from other filmmakers. They will have a distinct style that runs through most of their films and in some cases, the visual elements will convey the film more successfully than the narrative; camera shots, lighting, mise-en-scene, and scene length all work to create this.

It is a mental phenomenon by which viewers derive more meaning from the interaction of two sequential shots than from a single shot in isolation. Kuleshov put a film together  with a plate of soup and a dead woman on a recliner. “Point-of-view shots can, but don’t always, align viewers with characters. They help to explain the way characters experience the world, validate character interpretations of events, and provide information about motivation. This was said by Maria Pramaggiore and Tom Wallis, Film: A Critical Introduction, Soviet Montage:  Soviet montage theory is an approach to understanding and creating cinema that relies heavily upon editing. It is the principal contribution of so...
